GLITTER POND

As I prepared for my grand children to come for a visit, I searched my art supply cabinet for markers, colored pencils, & pens: I pulled out the bin of mixed media. There buried among everything from embroidery floss to gummy erasers, I found packets of fairy dust; very fine glitter of every color. I could hear my sons voice as he told me, “glitter is banned in our house!” I thought that was a bit harsh, you can’t have children without glitter. But I did heed his advice and removed all the packets of glitter. He said it ends up everywhere and you can’t get rid of it. He always ends up going to work wearing it,… ..on his head. At his very young age he has a severe receding hairline that he does not like to draw attention to.

The following weekend I stood upon the chair to water my plants and was surprised to see glitter all over the table, now sparkling in the sunlight . It was the amber gold colored packet; somehow I had missed it. I wiped the table down with a damp cloth and laughed!

As I wrapped up all my morning tasks, I was anxiously preparing for a kayaking trip. I had passed this place over the years on my way to the ocean beach, it always called out to me; now, finally I was going to explore it. I wanted to swim in the cold salt water and kayak as far as I could see.

As I pulled up to the dirt parking lot with the water in front of me and several cars along the roadside, I knew I could easily pull my kayak up to the water. Saying hello to a few very friendly people. I walked into the water, what a surprise it was not ocean water it was a little pond about 2 miles long with fresh water. It was just right for swimming; not too cold, very refreshing, wonderful!! I looked down at the bottom as I walked deeper into the water, the sand was glittering, there were large rocks with shiny golden spots all over them. The sunlight sparkled through the water, it was beautiful, I laughed and remembered the glitter table. I dragged my kayak into the water and off I went to explore the other side.

As I pulled up to the shore line I was staring into the water waiting for the shallow shoreline to appear, all I could see was sparkling gold flecks floating down into the deep water. Than came the big rocks down in the water with more gold patches shining in the sun, Glitter Everywhere!! I asked the people at the shore what the name of this pond was, no one knew, there were never any signs anywhere they said.

I returned back to the sandy shore for a refreshing swim in “ Glitter Pond”
